I have been travelling many times to Düsseldorf for business.
The Nokia Siemens Networks office is located very close to the airport.
Here are some of my tricks when staying there.
Hotel:
– Holiday Inn Ratingen. Cheap. Walking distance from the NSN office and many other companies in that area. A bit far away from everything.
– Holiday Inn main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Cheap. Easy connection with the U-Bahn and S-Bahn and buses.
– Lindner hotels are good but not always easy to access. Lindner Rhein Residence is in the center and offer free bicycle rentals. Lindner Congress is on the wrong side of the Rhein but close to many sports places.
– NH is ok but a bit expensive for the value.
– Renaissance is very good but not so well located. Nothing around really or you’ll have to walk or take the tram. The tram station is right outside.
– Holiday Inn Express Duesseldorf North is good but also not very well located.
– Intercontinental is smack in the center on the nicest avenue. But a bit expensive.
– Köln also offers a lot of hotels. Twice I had to stay outside of Düsseldorf because of fairs happening when I was there. Then the prices of hotels become unreachable. 350-450 euros for some simple 3 stars hotels. So once I went to a Best Western somewhere in the suburb. And another time to the Radisson in Köln.
Transportation:
– You could rent a car if you have to stay out of the city for some reason. That’s a good way to taste the world famous Autobahn… Try to get a good car for that… I once had a BMW after upgrades and unavailability of the model I chose. It was very interesting…
– If you stay in the center, use the public transport. They are very efficient in Düsseldorf.
Entertainement:
– Düsseldorf offers literaly thousands of bars. The city is known for the longest bar in the world. Check it out on wikitravel.com
– Düsseldorf has a very well known carnival too.
– There are lots of sports areas close to the Rhein. It’s a great place for a morning jog.
Insider tricks:
– There is a diners club lounge at the airport.
– With at least a silver Finnair plus card you can go to the BA lounge which is pretty good.
